Adam gets his Black Belt

Wednesday, February 10, 2010
GB Temecula promotes its first Black Belts!
Congratulations to Jordan Blanchard and Adam Figurski

Adam has trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Prof. Ricardo Guimaraes, Sr. since the academy opened in 2002.   According to his wife Alicia, “Adam fell in love with the sport from day one and it had changed his life”.  Shortly after beginning his training he married his highschool sweetheart and they have two children, Kaden and Khloe. His family is very supportive of his training, commitment to his students, and to the school.

The students agree, “Adam is always willing to share his knowledge on any tequnique to help another improve their game. He is a great guy!”. The passion to teach has propelled him into co-ownership and Head Instructor of the Gracie Barra Hemet School that has recently expanded after only a year and is still growing with great familys and students.

Congratulations Prof. Figurski !!

To Remember………

The day Master Carlos Gracie Jr. was promoted to Red/Black Belt, featured on graciemag.com

Observed by 50 other black belts, cousin Rickson and a number of people occupying the spacious new headquarters of Gracie Barra America in Irvine, California, Renzo Gracie carries the red-and-black belt of his master, Carlos Gracie Junior.

Everyone awaited the punch line in the speech, and, surprisingly, the cheerful myth of fighting started gushing copious tears. “Don’t laugh,” he says as he collects himself, before drying the tears and embracing Carlinhos, fastening the new belt around the professor’s waist.

The promotion ceremony held the evening of June 3, 2008 was opened by faithful student Marcio Feitosa, who emotionally handed his command over to black belt and economist Flavio Cachorrinho, who introduced the guest speakers, starting with Rickson Gracie.

“We Gracies have a mission much greater than MMA. MMA was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu, but our true role is to strengthen the good qualities of the human being through Jiu-Jitsu. And, for all he has built, I am proud to be his relative,” said Rickson.

They also spoke of Carlinhos’s contemporary and the pioneer of Jiu-Jitsu in the United Kingdom Mauricio Gomes, and his son and current holder of Jiu-Jitsu’s most important title, absolute world champion Roger Gracie.

And the one responsible for introducing Jiu-Jitsu to Sheikh Tahoon (and thus the creation of the ADCC), Nelson Monteiro; Carlinhos’s student to have promoted most black belts (60) Vinicius Draculino; Braulio Estima; and also-Carlinhos-black belt and vice-president of GRACIEMAG Luca Atalla. And representing a new generation of students, blue belt Kenny Epstein.

MMA was used for use to show the effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu, but our true role is to strengthen the good qualities of the human being” Rickson

Introduced only as the best student promoted by Carlinhos, and author of the final speech before the promotion ceremony, Renzo highlighted the importance of the environment Carlinhos created to develop the art.

“To get tough, to be a champion, that all passes. I think the most important thing I found in his academy was love,” he said, crying, before hugging his master.

Renzo recounted an experience from his past to illustrate how his uncle used reverse psychology to stimulate him:

“He looked at me [when Renzo was a lower-belt youth, and trained among family], and said in front of everyone: ‘Renzo, what am I going to do with you? You are horrible!’ All he needed to do was put it that way for me to prove to him I could be good.”

Carlinhos raised the belt fastened by Renzo without pomp:

“Belts hold no importance to me. We are the ones who give the belt personality, and not it that gives personality to us. But I am proud to have all you gathered here. What is what I love and that will never change. In the future, I may have a better house, a better car, but I’ll still come to the academy every day, training with my family.

If you have the moon in your sights and you miss, you are still among the stars. That is why I preach a healthy life and I hope to have all of you gathered here for a long time yet” Carlos Gracie Jr.

“I’m 52 years old, and I model myself on the example of my father, who, when I was born, was 56, and still had five more kids after me. However, when someone shows up with 40, 50 years of age to train and thinks he is too old, I explain that it is never too late to live out our dreams.

“My father stimulated us to dream. As I read the other day, If you have the moon in your sights and you miss, you are still among the stars. That is why I preach a healthy life and I hope to have all of you gathered, white and blue belts already as black belts, 18 years from now, when I receive my red belt. And all this will be ten times bigger.”

Carlinhos, whose achievements are of the caliber of Gracie Barra, the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and GRACIEMAG, promises:

“This is just the beginning.”

Gracie Barra Tournament on Saturday and Sunday Oct 17th, and 18th.

Gracie Barra Tournament on Saturday and Sunday Oct 17th, and 18th.

Attn. Gracie Barra Competitors,

First we would like to thank all of you for your continued support of the Gracie Barra Competition Network (GBCN).   The latest chapter in the Gracie Barra tournament series promises to be the best so far, and we wanted to share some of the changes that you will witness at our next event.    The So Cal Classic will take place on Saturday and Sunday October 17th, and 18th, 2009.  That’s right, two days!  Saturday will include the Kids tournament and a No-Gi tournament.   Sunday will be a Gi competition for all adult levels, including the absolute divisions for all belts.  We will post a more detailed schedule as the event date gets closer.

The KIDS tournament:  We will be offering an extended format kids tournament with wonderful photo opportunities and plenty of Jiu Jitsu action.  We will be dedicating more time and effort to the future stars of our sport and want all of our parents to know that this promises to be a very special event.  We will have a new bracketing plan that will ensure better matchups and enable the kids to fight with children the same size and level.  Also we will implement a podium and group picture format that promises some superior photo opportunities.  We felt that we needed to improve this portion of our tournament and we have addressed these issues.  We would like to assure all of our members that we have put a great deal of time and effort into making this the best tournament ever for your children.

No-Gi tournament: You asked for it and we listened.  We have added a no-gi tournament that will give our higher belts an opportunity to showcase their skills.  The No-gi worlds will be less two weeks after our tournament and this will give our members a stage to test themselves against their GB brothers.  This portion of the tournament will be offered to blue belt and above (sorry no white belts). This will be held on Saturday afternoon so you will still be able to coach all of your athletes in the Gi tournament on Sunday.

All Day GI action: We have dedicated a full day our gi competitors at this event.  A full day means plenty of time for you all to compete in your weight division and the absolute division. We will have more time for podium pictures, more time for fighting, and more time to watch your friends.  Our adult tournaments have been our specialty and this event will continue to prove that Gracie Barra is the industry leader in the advancement of Jiu Jitsu.

We will still have all the great food and specialty booths that you know and love, as well the quality staff, referees, and beautiful venue that make a Gracie Barra tournament so special.  In addition as a competitor you will all receive a t-shirt, sticker, and your chance to compete and win a medal.   We want you to know that we are working hard to build the best tournament series in the industry.  If you have any suggestions of what you would like to see in the future please feel free to email our staff at gbcompnet@graciebarra.com

We would also like to point out that there will be a discounted pricing for early registration to this event.  We would like to encourage you register early so that you will be insured a spot at our tournament.  There will be a $10 increase to all prices on the 5th of October, and registration will close on the 12th.  So don’t miss out and get your registration submitted early.

Thanks again for all the support, train hard and we’ll see you on the mats.

Sincerely,

GBCN STAFF

Cool Video “GB America at Glover’s Travels”

“GB America at Glover’s Travels”

Hello Guys,

Take a look at this cool video with Jeff Glover and The Head Instructor of our Head Quarter in Irvine Professor Marcio Feitosa and our dear Professor Flavio.

It is amazing to see the growth of our sport in the world and to see that now people are diving into our philosophy and understanding that BJJ is a lot more than just the most efficient fight system, it is a way of life.

If you never being at our HQ in Irvine here is the website, GB AMERICA, we recommend you to use one of your days off and go there to get some train and meet some of our GB team mates. I’m sure that you will enjoy it!

Keeping the Legacy Alive!
