This month we are getting to know a little more about Professor Rodrigo, currently teaching classes in California.

What are you looking forward to in the next 2 months?

Since I arrived in the USA I knew that here I would be able to get even more close to Jiu-Jitsu and to Gracie Barra. I’m very happy doing what I love to do and with the best “Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu Academy”. My wishes from now, remain part of this team, increase my knowledge and strengthen Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu. Which means win the worlds, teach as best as I can, learn from experienced and be where Gracie Barra needs me.

Describe your ideal training session in 20 words or less.

I try to bring the fundamentals with me every time in my training sessions. Concentration, hard work , discipline, focus, respect are what I need.

If you could teach BJJ anywhere in the world where would it be?

I feel much honored to be one of Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu teachers and as soon as I keep being I’ll be happy to teach in any place that could value my credits and increase my knowledge.

Favorite thing to eat after training?

I learn since I started training Jiu-Jitsu that the food that you eat could describe the athlete that you are. So I try to keep a health diet, with fish, protein, some carbohydrate to repair the energy expenditure, and water to maintain the water balance.

Roger Gracie: “I think people beat themselves sometimes”

Some of the usual suspects were found rolling on the mats at GB America, focused on their techniques, their game plans, and their mental states. Big names like Roger Gracie, Romulo Barral, Kayron Gracie, Roberto “Tussa” Alencar, Otavio Sousa, Samuel Braga, Fabiana Borges, Lucas Rocha, and Ronis Gracie were found training at varying times, perfecting their games, working on their strategies, and rolling with old friends. Master Carlos was there, overseeing it all, and Head Instructor Marcio Feitosa led the competition classes that occurred.Roger Gracie was in prime condition, looking like he hadn’t fought a professional MMA fight just a couple weeks prior. He was back to his old self, looking very confident, poised and natural in his gi. Gracie said he felt good and had no injuries. “We athletes are used to pain like muscle soreness and all that,” he said, “but I’m 100% and ready to go.”

When looking at the history of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in America, the Gracie Barra school plays such a crucial role. Today we will speak with the first Gracie Barra representative in North America. Adem Redzovic and his brother Eddie run Gracie Barra Chicago. In this interview we will find out how he and his brother first learned about jiu jitsu, what it took to be a GB representative in the early days and what you should expect as you evolve technically in the gentle art.

OTM: How did you and your brother Eddie first leanr about jiu jitsu?

AR: My first exposure to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was watching the first few UFC events. Like most people I was confused when I saw this skinny guy taking guys to the ground and finishing them with submission holds, and like most people I was disappointed, I wanted to see guys getting knocked out.

GB purple belts on the rise

The up and coming purple belts from Gracie Barra are turning on the heat. With the schools in Southern California being so relatively new, many students are just beginning to progress through the “higher” level belt system. At the last GB Tournament, quite a few purple belts showed up to compete, showing how many more senior level belts are working their way up through the system. Many of them are born competitors and believe in competing at every tournament possible, including the upcoming Worlds.

HUGE day for Gracie Barra in Brazil

It is unbelievable how fast time goes by! Ii has being just 5 years that Master Carlos’ sounded out HQ in the US nad the GB Assoc. We remember very well that rom the beginning, still back in Lake Forest, we heard Master Carlos’ saying that in the future we would bring back to Brazil the things we were learning here in the US and contribute even more to development of Jiu-Jitsu and GB over there.

So that day has come! Today many GB Schools in Brazil are benefiting from the great findings GB made in the US over the last 5 years. If you are ever in Brazil for a training trip and visit for instance the Gracie Barra Campinas you can expect to see the same Programs (fundamentals, advanced and black belt), the same wall docs and so on and so forth.

We came to that realization when last week we received via email a video from Professor Flavio Almeida teaching a seminar last month in Brazil to class of over 150 students all wearing the GB uniform!

Once more Master Carlos’ words became true.

We are so happy to be part of such special time in GB history

Great Worlds experience for GB fighters

There were a lot of big names at the Worlds this year, as there are every year. Warriors determined to become world champions. Extraordinary athletes who train religiously, every day, multiple times a day, working towards that title, no matter how far in the future it may be. Names like Roger Gracie, Romulo Barral, Rodrigo Cavaca, Roberto Abreu, Bernardo Faria, Tarsis Humphreys, Marcelo Garcia, Kayron Gracie, Antonio Braga Neto, and Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” Maciel, Otavio Sousa, to name a few. They showed up again this year and wowed the crowd with what seemed to be their superhuman Jiu-Jitsu skills, speed, strength, and agility.

The average person is never going to see that kind of glory. For those who work a full-time job and train before or after work just for the love of the sport, the achievement comes from simply registering for the Worlds and taking to the mats, even if it’s for just one match, to say they competed in the biggest tournament of the year, in front of massive crowds and under even bigger expectations. This is the Worlds after all.

The job of head instructor is difficult and time consuming, yet very rewarding. Just ask Marcio Feitosa. He knows this all too well. As head instructor for five Gracie Barra schools, he has a very busy and interesting life that most people do not completely understand.

Under the leadership of Master Carlos Gracie, Jr., Feitosa has been given the directive to oversee school programs, including managing and training instructors. This type of instruction is not the kind of training that occurs on the mats. Instead, it is the kind of training that is outside the scope of BJJ techniques. Feitosa teaches his instructors how to share the philosophy of Gracie Barra with students. “They need to learn how to speak in front of people,” Feitosa says, “I teach them how to describe Jiu-Jitsu and define for them how they should speak to white belts, up to brown belts, for example.”

GB Temecula promotes its first Black Belts!

Congratulations to Jordan Blanchard and Adam Figurski

Adam has trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Prof. Ricardo Guimaraes, Sr. since the academy opened in 2002. According to his wife Alicia, “Adam fell in love with the sport from day one and it had changed his life”. Shortly after beginning his training he married his highschool sweetheart and they have two children, Kaden and Khloe. His family is very supportive of his training, commitment to his students, and to the school.

The students agree, “Adam is always willing to share his knowledge on any tequnique to help another improve their game. He is a great guy!”. The passion to teach has propelled him into co-ownership and Head Instructor of the Gracie Barra Hemet School that has recently expanded after only a year and is still growing with great familys and students.

The day Master Carlos Gracie Jr. was promoted to Red/Black Belt, featured on graciemag.com

Observed by 50 other black belts, cousin Rickson and a number of people occupying the spacious new headquarters of Gracie Barra America in Irvine, California, Renzo Gracie carries the red-and-black belt of his master, Carlos Gracie Junior.

Everyone awaited the punch line in the speech, and, surprisingly, the cheerful myth of fighting started gushing copious tears. “Don’t laugh,” he says as he collects himself, before drying the tears and embracing Carlinhos, fastening the new belt around the professor’s waist.

The promotion ceremony held the evening of June 3, 2008 was opened by faithful student Marcio Feitosa, who emotionally handed his command over to black belt and economist Flavio Cachorrinho, who introduced the guest speakers, starting with Rickson Gracie.

“We Gracies have a mission much greater than MMA. MMA was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu, but our true role is to strengthen the good qualities of the human being through Jiu-Jitsu. And, for all he has built, I am proud to be his relative,” said Rickson.

They also spoke of Carlinhos’s contemporary and the pioneer of Jiu-Jitsu in the United Kingdom Mauricio Gomes, and his son and current holder of Jiu-Jitsu’s most important title, absolute world champion Roger Gracie.

And the one responsible for introducing Jiu-Jitsu to Sheikh Tahoon (and thus the creation of the ADCC), Nelson Monteiro; Carlinhos’s student to have promoted most black belts (60) Vinicius Draculino; Braulio Estima; and also-Carlinhos-black belt and vice-president of GRACIEMAG Luca Atalla. And representing a new generation of students, blue belt Kenny Epstein.

Introduced only as the best student promoted by Carlinhos, and author of the final speech before the promotion ceremony, Renzo highlighted the importance of the environment Carlinhos created to develop the art.

“To get tough, to be a champion, that all passes. I think the most important thing I found in his academy was love,” he said, crying, before hugging his master.

Renzo recounted an experience from his past to illustrate how his uncle used reverse psychology to stimulate him:

“He looked at me [when Renzo was a lower-belt youth, and trained among family], and said in front of everyone: ‘Renzo, what am I going to do with you? You are horrible!’ All he needed to do was put it that way for me to prove to him I could be good.”

Carlinhos raised the belt fastened by Renzo without pomp:

“Belts hold no importance to me. We are the ones who give the belt personality, and not it that gives personality to us. But I am proud to have all you gathered here. What is what I love and that will never change. In the future, I may have a better house, a better car, but I’ll still come to the academy every day, training with my family.

If you have the moon in your sights and you miss, you are still among the stars. That is why I preach a healthy life and I hope to have all of you gathered here for a long time yet” Carlos Gracie Jr.

“I’m 52 years old, and I model myself on the example of my father, who, when I was born, was 56, and still had five more kids after me. However, when someone shows up with 40, 50 years of age to train and thinks he is too old, I explain that it is never too late to live out our dreams.

“My father stimulated us to dream. As I read the other day, If you have the moon in your sights and you miss, you are still among the stars. That is why I preach a healthy life and I hope to have all of you gathered, white and blue belts already as black belts, 18 years from now, when I receive my red belt. And all this will be ten times bigger.”

Carlinhos, whose achievements are of the caliber of Gracie Barra, the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and GRACIEMAG, promises:

“This is just the beginning.”
