Muay Thai
A Brief history
Muay Thai, or the “science of eight limbs,” was created by Thai soldiers struggling to defend their land thousands of years ago. It was named the “science of eight limbs” because the soldiers turned their hands, elbows, legs, and knees all into deadly weapons. Over time the art was moved from the battlefield, and adopted into a sport. In the early days fighters fought in dirt pits, and it was not uncommon to fight to the death.
In the twentieth century specific rules were set to increase a fighter’s lifespan and longevity in the sport, and eventually time limits and weight classes were established. Today, Muay Thai fighters are some of the most supreme fighters, and well conditioned athletes in the world. Muay Thai is considered the most devastating striking art in martial arts today.
